This chapter comes from Paul Crosthwaite’s book, Criticism, Crisis, and Contemporary Narrative: Textual Horizons in an Age of Global Risk. The intention of this chapter is to “take South African literature as a point of departure in an attempt to interrogate the value of utopia and dystopia in critical reflection on global capitalism and the evolving discourse on the risk society.” The chapter goes on to focus on Moxyland and how the novel deals with the interplay of dystopian and utopian elements along with how the risk society and most importantly capitalism affects the main characters and the society in general.
